Elizabeth

Elizabeth has grown into one of Charlotte’s lesser-known hidden gems.

Welcome to Elizabeth

Fall in love with the distinct charisma of this inner-Charlotte treasure

Tucked adjacent to the bustle of downtown Charlotte, the historic neighborhood of Elizabeth serves as a walkable haven for residents craving a quieter, eclectic lifestyle. Mature trees ensconce the roads, where enchanting homes and niche local businesses rest nestled behind manicured sidewalks. Elizabeth maintains much of the urban thrum of inner Charlotte, all the while wrapping it in a feel-good, small-town vibe.

Elizabeth began to bloom in full during the early 1900s when a trolley line made the neighborhood accessible to the greater Charlotte area. Since then, Elizabeth has grown into one of Charlotte’s lesser-known hidden gems, packed with foodie hotspots, carefully curated boutiques, and a picturesque collection of vibrant historic homes.

There’s a beautiful array of architectural diversity when it comes to the residential properties of Elizabeth, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Styles here span from well-appointed Victorians built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to darling 1920s Craftsman houses, gorgeous new-build townhomes, and modern traditional designs with contemporary interiors and open floor plans.

What to Love

  • A mix of architectural findings to satisfy any desire, including a great number of new-builds
  • An influx of vitality from the nearby Central Piedmont Community College
  • Charming and peaceful with plenty of activities

People & Lifestyle

A perfect blend of college kids and families, Elizabeth has an energy that can keep up with the busier parts of Charlotte while never sacrificing a laid-back attitude or its vintage environment. Its serene residential atmosphere is wonderful for families, and history buffs will adore the plethora of significant sites.

Dining, Shopping & Entertainment

Family-owned ice cream shops and vintage boutiques pepper the neighborhood of Elizabeth, and on any street corner, you’re apt to encounter upscale and specialty independent shops such as The Spoke Easy. As a full-service bicycle shop, this little store ensures that the residents of Elizabeth have everything they need for a smooth ride.

Foodies will be enamored with the bounty of good eats, including hometown favorites Lupie’s Cafe, where comfort foods and piping hot cups of coffee are readily available. Set inside the warm interior of a century-old home, Cajun Queen entertains its guests with nightly jazz performances and a mouthwatering rotation of seasonal fish.

Elizabeth’s swanky historic ambiance is the ideal setting for upscale dining experiences, and premier fine dining restaurants such as The Fig Tree have joined the stylish neighborhood throughout the years. Timeless cocktails and chic decor are just two of the pillars at The Crunkleton, whose open-fire cooking uses traditional techniques with a modern flair. When in need of a banquet feast for their own events, residents turn to The Andersons, renowned for their unbelievably good pecan pie.

Things to Do

With ample natural green space and community-driven events, Elizabeth embraces its family-friendly reputation and strives to expand its amenities and social calendar. One of the best-known spots for entertainment, the Visulite Theatre is often hailed as a frontrunner among Charlotte’s live music performance venues.

Those who prefer to spend their time in the open air will want to settle into the soft lawns of Independence Park. The park’s 24 acres harbor tranquil gardens and walking paths, reflecting ponds, and an abundance of playground equipment and sports fields. Residents will find that visiting other nearby parks and attractions is a breeze, thanks to the presence of the Charlotte CityLynx Gold Line, a streetcar designed to bring the city together through transport.

Annual and seasonal events in Elizabeth include participating in The Elizabeth Great Pumpkin Wall. This special, beloved tradition invites neighbors to carve their own orange masterpiece and set it among the giant swath of other pumpkin creations to build a marvelous collection of jack o’ lanterns. Those looking to give back to the community can run in the annual Elizabeth 8k Race, the proceeds of which go to local charities.
